Translation
For twenty years I was a reader of new plays at the National Theatre, as well as at BBC Films. That led to translation work. I have prepared literal translations from French, German and Spanish language plays for writers including Howard Barker, David Hare, Tanya Ronder, Patrick Marber and Ron Hutchinson.
I have for many years been part of the International Programme at the Royal Court, where I have translated several dozen plays from France, Spain, Cuba, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Colombia and Mexico for workshops and performance.
My translation of Pedro Miguel Rozo’s Nuestra Vida Privada (Our Private Life) was staged at the Royal Court Upstairs in 2011, directed by Lyndsey Turner. It is published by Oberon books.
My translation of Wajdi Mouawad’s Incendies (Scorched) was directed at the Old Vic Tunnels by Patricia Benecke.
Translations of mine have also been performed at the Young Vic and Trafalgar Studios.
My translation of Alberto Villareal’s Deshuesadero de Sangre Basura (Used Blook Junkyard) is published in an anthology of Mexican plays published by Nick Hern Books.
Over several years I have translated a series of French plays for the Sala Beckett in Barcelona.
In 2013, with a grant from the National Theatre I travelled to Mexico to participate in an international conference of theatre translators organised by UNAM, the University of the City of Mexico.
In 2018 I travelled to Madrid, the guest of FSGAE, an organisation representing Spanish stage writers. There were translators from 5 other countries, and we spent 4 days talking Spanish playwrights about their past work and future projects.
